Christmas freight planning: a guide for Australian businesses

Christmas freight planning: a guide for Australian businesses

For most businesses, the Christmas quarter brings a significant increase in freight requirements. More stock to move, tighter deadlines, and higher customer expectations, all at the busiest time of year in the supply chain.

The businesses that navigate it well tend to have one thing in common: they started planning in October, not December. Here’s what that planning should include.

Confirm your freight capacity early

Peak season capacity fills up faster than most businesses expect. Freight providers are managing higher volumes across their entire customer base, and last-minute requests are harder to accommodate. Confirming your requirements with your freight partner in October gives you the best chance of having capacity locked in when you need it.

Map your critical delivery windows

Not all freight is equally time-sensitive, but during peak season it helps to know which deliveries are truly critical and which have flexibility. Sharing this with your freight provider allows them to prioritise accordingly and flag any potential issues early.

Build buffer into your timelines

Even the most reliable freight operations experience delays during peak season. Road congestion, higher depot volumes, and unexpected demand spikes all contribute. Building a buffer of a day or two into your delivery timelines where possible reduces the impact when things don’t go exactly to plan.

Communicate your volume forecast

If your business sees significant volume increases in November and December, share your forecast with your freight partner as early as possible. The more visibility they have into your upcoming requirements, the better placed they are to plan capacity and resourcing around them.

Have a contingency plan

Peak season is when freight relationships are really tested. If your current provider isn’t meeting your needs, it’s better to identify that in October than in the middle of December. Know who you’d call if something went wrong, and make sure your freight partner has a clear escalation process for urgent issues.
